Menopause support on International Women's Day 2024

menopause support on international women's day

Happy International Women's Day!

On this day of celebrating women and advocating for gender equality, I want to dive into a topic that might stir up some thoughts - the empowerment of our voices in the midst of diverse opinions.

This year's theme of 'Inspired Inclusion' has me reflecting on a recent Lancet article. While I may not agree with every point, it sheds light on the need for a broader conversation about menopause support.

Yes, menopause can be a natural transition, but it's not confined to midlife, nor is it always uneventful. Let's break the mold and embrace discussions around surgical, medical, and early menopause, affecting people of all genders and ages. The impact extends beyond physical symptoms to emotional and mental wellbeing - which are issues close to my heart and passion behind Pausefully.

The time has come to raise awareness and break down the barriers surrounding menopause. It's not just a women's issue; it's everyone's issue. The diverse experiences and opinions surrounding menopause enrich the dialogue, helping us understand that one size does not fit all. Let's unite in dispelling stigmas and embracing the unique journey each individual undertakes.

In our pursuit of equality in women's health, whether in public spaces, workplaces, or medical research, we must acknowledge the disparities and bridge the gaps. It's disheartening to realise how little attention women's health receives, but that's a conversation for another day!

The Lancet calls for 'easy access to impartial information.' Sounds ideal, but who among us doesn't carry biases? Lived experiences often shape our perspectives, even within the healthcare realm. Are healthcare professionals truly impartial, or are they influenced by personal experiences and pharmaceutical ties? (And yes, speaking from my 10 years in pharma, I get it!)

After all, aren't we all after the same outcome? Maybe it's about empowering ourselves to sift through the wealth of information, making informed decisions. HRT or no HRT? CBT or talk therapy? Herbal remedies or holistic treatments? Our voices matter, and the 'menowashing' shouldn't drown them out. Let's listen with empathy, support diverse choices, and empower each other in navigating the myriad options.

Because when it comes to menopause, our experiences are as unique as we are. 💪
